A warm welcome awaits you in Newton Mearns Parish Church

Hello everyone,

We’re now into March, the nights are getting lighter and hopefully we won’t see the gritters on our roads for a while.

As we move from winter to spring, I always find there is a real sense of hope and new beginnings, possibly even more so than at New Year. So much of nature bursts into life around now, it really is a joy to walk through parks or drive through the country.

This time of year, also marks the beginning of the season of Lent, the six weeks before we remember and celebrate Easter.

Traditionally Lent is a time of giving something up like chocolate, or watching TV, or social media, to help us reflect on our relationship with God. And whilst to do these things can help us focus on God, and be less distracted on what is around us, Lent is also a time where we can take something up. Organisations like Christian Aid encourage us not only to give something up but also to take something up.

So why don’t we all try and do that? Examples we could look at trying could be things like following a short daily devotional guide, or going for a walk every day, or perhaps praying for a member of the congregation every day, none of which are particularly time consuming - but as a high street supermarket is keen to tell us ‘every little helps’. I’m looking forward to spending my first Holy Week and Easter with you here at Newton Mearns. And I pray that we continue to grow and develop as the body of Christ, for it is only with the help and support of one another that we can do that.

Easter blessings

Rev Stuart Crawford
